The thesis commences with a critical review of Western ideological perspectives on children and childhood, and on how these perspectives are generally represented in (Western) children’s literature. Additionally, it is aimed at exploring whether Dahl's novel constitutes a deviation from the dominant representation of the ideological adult-child power relationship in Western children’s literature. The aim of the analysis is to demonstrate how the ideological adult-child power relationship is linguistically represented in Matilda. Through critical discourse analysis, the text of the novel is analysed using three linguistic strategies and devices: Chilton’s strategic functions of coercion and legitimation / delegitimation, and naming.
